Missouri Southern Edges Mavs, 5-4

Missouri Southern's Kasey Adams rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over UNO's Katie Spahn in the final match Saturday to give the Lions a 5-4 victory in the NCAA II North Central Regional second round. Missouri Southern will advance to meet Northwood in the round of 16 May 10 in Kansas City, Mo.
The win at No. 6 singles by Adams spoiled a dramatic comeback by the Mavericks, who lost two of three doubles matches and two of the first three singles matches to trail, 4-2.
Maverick junior Maggie Russell, at No. 3 singles, and Rachel Faulk, at No. 2, each posted dramatic three-set wins to forge a tie at 4 matches each. Faulk defeated Barb Gombosi, 6-1, 0-6, 6-1, while Russell downed Kristen Meschede, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6. Russell trailed 2-5 in the third set before rallying and finally winning the tie-breaker, 7-0.
UNO's lone senior, Abby Wilson, and Katie Schmidt teamed up for the Mavericks' doubles win, 8-2, over Meschede and Kim McMunn.
UNO ended it season at 11-8, while Missouri Southern improved to 14-7.
