Split Bumps Mavericks to 2nd in NCC

MANKATO, Minn. -- Minnesota State, Mankato's Matt McMurtry's five-hit, 5-0 decision clinched the North Central Conference regular season title Sunday before UNO rebounded to claim a 7-3 win in the nightcap as Chad Leon and Evan Porter combined for five hits, three home runs and three RBIs.
UNO, now 42-11 overall, finished NCC play at 14-3, while MSU moved to 37-11 and 16-2. UNO will open play in the NCC tournament in Mankato Thursday as the No. 2 seed. The pairings and bracket will be announced on Tuesday.
Adam Sudbeck's two-run homer highlighted a three-run fifth inning in the opener for Minnesota State. McMurtry fanned seven and walked two to improve to 9-2. Nick Russell (5-2) took the loss for UNO.
In the second game, Porter homered to lead off the second and UNO added two more runs in the third on a single by Min Sung and a fielder's choice by Matt Meyer. Leon added a solo homer in the fourth, his 10th of the year, to expand the lead to 4-0.
MSU rallied for three runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the fourth to narrow the gap, but UNO responded in the fifth with two more runs. Marc Centofante's sacrifice fly to center scored Porter and Meyer walked and scored on a passed ball to boost the lead to 6-3.
Porter tacked on an insurance run with his second home run of the game and his fifth of the season in the seventh. Tim Huber pitched five innings and gave up three hits to earn the win and move to 4-2 and Shawn Smith shut down MSU the final two innings.
