24th-Ranked Mavs Squeak Past Emporia State

ST. JOSEPH, Mo -- Sophomore Amber Buysse's service ace at match point gave the 24th-ranked UNO Mavericks a dramatic 3-2 (26-30, 30-20, 30-19, 30-32, 16-14) victory over Emporia State in Nebraska-Omaha's first match at the Missouri Western Ramada Inn Invitational Friday afternoon.
The Mavericks, who saved one match point in the fifth game trailing 14-13, reeled off three-straight points to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Senior outside hitter Christina Reicks led the Mavericks with her third double-double of the season, collecting 19 kills and 18 digs. Reicks was one of five Mavericks with double-figure kill totals. Junior middle blocker Carlie Christensen added 16 kills and four blocks. Junior rightside hitter Nicole McLeod hit .478 with 11 kills and no errors in 23 attempts. Freshman middle blocker Ellen Thommes netted 12 kills and freshman outside hitter Kelli Goeser notched 10.
Junior setter Katie Agnew helped the team to a .266 hitting percentage while recording a double-double with 58 assists and 12 digs, while adding four kills.
The Mavericks were led defensively by freshman Kayla Jansen's 19 digs.
UNO will continue action in the tournament later Friday when they battle Fort Hays State at 6 p.m.
