Minnesota State Stops Mavs in Overtime, 3-2

Jon Kalinski's breakaway goal at 3:29 of overtime gave Minnesota State, Mankato a 3-2 non-conference win over Nebraska-Omaha Tuesday night, allowing MSU to claim the Spirit of the Maverick Trophy for a fifth straight year.
UNO, now 10-10-6 overall, will resume Central Collegiate Hockey Association play Friday night at Ferris State. Minnesota State improved to 8-14-4 overall. The teams skated to a 4-4 tie earlier this year. The Spirit of the Maverick Trophy, in its sixth season, is awarded to the team scoring the most goals in the two-game, home-and-home series.
Kalinski stole the puck near the MSU blue line after UNO had at least two good scoring chances thwarted by Minnesota State goalie Mike Zacharias in overtime.
The teams wasted little time getting on the board. MSU's Travis Morin beat UNO goalie Jerad Kaufmann from just outside the right side of the crease at 1:36 on a pass from Mick Berge on a power play. UNO tied the game just 1:21 later as Scott Parse teed off from the high slot for his 17th of the year.
Bryan Marshall gave UNO the lead at 18:48 of the second when his shot from the high slot deflected off an MSU defenseman and underneath Zacharias.
MSU's Joel Hanson knotted the score at 2 when his shot from the right point eluded Kaufmann at 8:33 of the third.
