Late Outburst Propels No. 1 Sioux Over Mavs

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Nebraska-Omaha women's basketball team stood within a single point of North Dakota, the top-ranked team in Division II, with 11 minutes to play, but the Sioux exploded for 42 points in those 11 minutes to come away with a 95-67 North Central Conference win Saturday afternoon at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
UNO falls to 12-6 on the year, 0-4 in NCC play. North Dakota improves to 21-1, 4-0 in conference play. The Sioux have now won 16 in a row and 22 straight NCC contests dating to last season.
The Mavericks trailed 51-38 with 16:23 remaining. A steal by Lacey Geitzenauer set up an Ashley Nelson 3-pointer sparking a 14-2 run. A Geitzenauer lay-up made it a one-point game, 53-52, with 11:14 left.
Kierah Kimbrough, the three-time NCC Player of the Week, scored the next six points for UND, going on to finish with a game-high 23 points.
Carissa Jahner drilled two 3-pointers for a 65-54 lead, and the Sioux rolled off a 19-3 run over the next five minutes. In all, UND outscored the Mavs 42-15 over the final 11:14.
Jahner scored 16, becoming the 25th player in UND history to reach 1,000 career points.
Karen Thies led UNO with 16 points and seven rebounds. Alyssa Green scored 12, with Nelson finishing with nine and Jill Wolf scoring eight.
The Mavericks will have two more opportunities to earn their first NCC win next week when they host Augustana Thursday at Sapp Fieldhouse, then travel to St. Cloud State Saturday.
