Key CCHA Series for Mavs, Northern Michigan on Tap

The Mavericks return to Qwest Center Omaha to host Northern Michigan on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27 in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association series important for both teams as they jockey for playoff positions. Faceoff is at 7:05 both nights. The series starts a stretch of four straight home games for UNO.

The games will be broadcast on KKAR, 1290 AM, with the pre-game show beginning 30 minutes before faceoff. Greg Harrington will call the action, with Terry Leahy providing color commentary.
The Records
The Mavericks are 11-11-6 overall and 8-8-2 in the CCHA. UNO is coming off a split at Ferris State. Northern Michigan is 11-15-2 overall after losing a non-conference game Wednesday at Minnesota Duluth, 4-2.
The Coaches
Nebraska-Omaha's Mike Kemp is in his 10th season as the Maverick head coach. Kemp is a 1975 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. The Duluth, Minn., native is 155-182-43 at UNO overall and has an 85-98-31 record in the CCHA. Kemp is 10-10-2 vs. Northern Michigan. Walt Kyle is in his 5th season as the head coach at Northern Michigan and has a 98-78-17 overall mark with the Wildcats. He is 7-6-0 vs. UNO.
The Series
The all-time series between the schools in hockey is tied 10-10-2. The Wildcats claimed a 5-2 verdict in Omaha earlier this season in the Mutual of Omaha Stampede championship game.
Last Games
Nebraska-Omaha split its CCHA series with Ferris State last weekend. The Mavericks notched a 3-1 win on Friday night before the Bulldogs rebounded with a 6-3 triumph on Saturday. Tomas Klempa and Alex Nikiforuk each had a goal and an assist Friday night and goalie Jeremie Dupont made 28 saves. Klempa scored in the first and Juha Uotila on a power play midway through the second. After Ferris State spoiled the shutout, Nikiforuk sealed the win with a shorthanded goal with 40 seconds left. Saturday, FSU scored three times in the second for a 4-1 lead. Mick Lawrence scored in the first and third periods around a Dan Charleston goal for UNO. The Bulldogs added an empty net goal after UNO pulled within 5-3 midway through the third period on Lawrence's second goal on a power play.
Coming Up
The Mavericks will host Michigan State on Feb. 2-3 at the Qwest Center. The Saturday game will be televised by NETV statewide and will be picked up nationally by CSTV. Both games will faceoff at 7:05 p.m. The following week UNO will travel to Notre Dame for a two-game series, then will come back home to host Ohio State at Civic Auditorium in the final regular season home games of the year. Game times are 7:05 and 8:05 p.m.
