Charleston and Parse Lead Mavs to 5-2 Win

OMAHA, Neb.-- Sophomore forward Dan Charleston scored two goals and senior forward Scott Parse picked up three assists as the University of Nebraska-Omaha picked up a 5-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Northern Michigan Friday night at Qwest Center Omaha.
Nebraska-Omaha is now 12-11-6 overall and 9-8-2 in the CCHA; Northern Michigan fell to 11-16-2 on the season and 8-12-1 in the conference.
The game was a defensive battle at first with both teams demonstrating strong forechecking that prevented many quality scoring chances. UNO managed 12 shots on goal in the period, but Wildcats backstop Bill Zaniboni stopped all of them. Mike Santorelli finally started the scoring at the 13:07 mark, beating Mavericks freshman goalie Jeremie Dupont stick-side with a wrister from the right circle.
The Mavericks owned the second period from start to finish, peppering NMU's goalies for 16 shots, while allowing only two on Dupont. Charleston opened the scoring for UNO with a power play goal at the 1:51 mark, firing a wrister over Zaniboni's left shoulder from a sharp angle. Parse and freshman defenseman Eddie Del Grosso assisted.
Freshman forward Dan Swanson scored the most controversial goal of the night at the 4:38 mark. After intercepting a pass in the neutral zone, Swanson skated in on the right side and beat Zaniboni to the stick side. The net moved, but the angle at which the puck exited made it appear it had hit the corner of the iron. But video review showed the puck had gone in, slid down, then found a hole in the net near the ice.
The dust had barely settled when senior forward Mike Eickman scored his first of the year on a slapper from the top of the slot at 5:02 with assists going to junior forward Bill Bagron and Parse picked up the assists.
UNO picked right up where it left off in the third, as Charleston scored his second of the night and ninth on the season with a power play goal at the 5:31 mark of the third. He buried a perfect pass from Parse into a wide open net, giving Parse his third assist of the night and 24th of the year. Senior forward Alex Nikiforuk notched his 25th assist of the year on the goal.
Freshman forward Nick Fanto added an insurance goal, his third of the year, at the 17:23 mark. Senior forward Brent Kisio earned his first assist of the year, with Swanson adding a helper.
Santorelli closed out the scoring with a goal with 1:41 left in the game.
