Mavericks Hang Tough, Edge St. Cloud State, 71-70

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Four players scored in double-figures and Karen Thies recorded her second double-double of the year, as Nebraska-Omaha's women's basketball team won its second straight North Central Conference game in a nail-biter, defeating St. Cloud State, 71-70, Saturday afternoon at Halenbeck Hall.
UNO (14-6, 2-4 NCC) took the lead with 13:19 left in the first half and never gave it up, though the Huskies (12-8, 1-5 NCC) threatened on numerous occasions.
The Mavericks' first 19 points came from seven different scorers. Erika Quigley single-handedly kept the Huskies in the game, scoring her team's first 15 points in that span. A layup by UNO freshman Jill Wolf, the eighth Maverick to score, made it a 21-15 game at the 10:18 mark. Cayla Hargrove hit her second of three 3-pointers at the 9:30 mark, giving UNO a seven-point lead. But Shannon Francis, St. Cloud State's all-time leader in 3-point baskets, answered with two triples to cut the lead to one. UNO senior Lacey Geitzenauer hit a 3-pointer of her own with 1:49 left, giving the Mavericks a 37-29 lead, their biggest of the game. They held on to the eight-point advantage at the half, 39-31.
Ashley Freerksen knocked down a 3-pointer to open the second half, then a short jumper by Alyssa Green made it a 13-point game. But Kayla Rengel quickly scored five straight for the Huskies, setting off an 11-2 run that made it 46-42 at the 16:23 mark. The action remained tight over the next several minutes with UNO's lead fluctuating from 10 points to as little as two, 63-61, with 8:06 to play. After a timeout, the Mavs pushed the lead back to eight, but the Huskies fought back again, and a short jumper by Quigley again made it a one-point game, 71-70, with 3:11 to play.
Amazingly, neither team could hit a basket the rest of the game. The Huskies got one last opportunity with 11 seconds remaining, but two last-second shots wouldn't fall, allowing the Mavericks to escape with the win.
Freerksen led UNO with 17 points, followed by Hargrove with 11, of her points coming in the first half. Thies scored 10 with 10 rebounds, adding a season-high seven assists. Geizenauer also scored 10, with Green scoring nine and Wolf eight.
Quigley finished with 29 points and 11 rebounds.
The Mavericks next action will be next Saturday, Feb. 3, when they visit No. 17 South Dakota at 6 p.m.
