Mavs Skate Past Northern Michigan, 6-1

Scott Parse scored a pair of goals, including one shorthanded, as the Mavericks completed a two-game sweep of Central Collegiate Hockey Association rival Northern Michigan Saturday night with a 6-1 win in front of 6,508 at Qwest Center Omaha.
The win moves the Mavericks to 13-11-6 overall and to 10-8-2 in the league, three points behind fourth-place Michigan State. The Spartans, idle this weekend, will be UNO's home opponent next Friday and Saturday nights. Northern Michigan dropped to 11-17-2 and 8-13-1.
UNO's special teams spelled the difference, producing two shorthanded goals and one on a power play. UNO killed off nine Wildcat power plays in the game.
After NMU claimed a 1-0 lead on a first-period goal by Ray Kaunisto, the Mavericks took the lead with goals 2:21 apart by Brandon Scero and Dan Knapp.
UNO then had to kill off a pair of penalties, including 5-on-3 situation for 90 seconds to preserve the advantage. Seconds after the Wildcats' power play ended, Parse swooped in and beat NMU goalie Brian Stewart at 12:05 for a 3-1 lead.
Freshman center Dan Swanson scored just six seconds after the third-period faceoff with the Mavs shorthanded. Swanson poked the disc free after winning the faceoff and lit the light with a wrist shot from the right circle. Less than four minutes later, Parse made it 5-1 with another on a penalty-kill. Stewart misplayed the puck, Parse gained control and scored his second shorthanded goal and 19th of the year at 3:53.
Mick Lawrence capped the scoring at 13:05 with his ninth of the year on a power play with assists from Scero and Dan Charleston.
Freshman goaltender Jeremie Dupont made 21 saves for his ninth win of the year. Dupont has only given up five goals in his last four starting assignments.
