Mavs' Rally Falls Short, Fall to Augie in NCC Open

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha women's basketball team had the misfortune of opening the North Central Conference season against the league's hottest team, falling 70-62 to Augustana Thursday night at the Sioux Falls Arena.
The Mavericks rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to trail by a single point with just under five minutes left to play, but the Vikings, who entered the contest on a 15-game winning streak, found a way to hold off the tenacious Mavs.
The loss drops UNO to 11-3 on the year, 0-1 in NCC play. Augustana now stands at 16-2, 1-0, further extending its school-record win streak.
The Mavericks were plagued by turnovers in the first half, giving the ball away 14 times. The shooting was sluggish, as well, as UNO hit only 10-of-32 shot attempts for 31 percent.
Ashley Freerksen went 4-for-8 including 3-for-4 on 3-point tries, scoring 13 in the first half for UNO. But Augustana's Alison Adamson outdid her, going 7-for-12 overall and 5-for-8 on threes, scoring 21 first-half points, helping the Vikings to a 47-32 lead at the break.
UNO fought back in the second half, opening with an 8-2 run, and later rolling off eight unanswered points. The Mavs trailed by only five with 6:53 to play. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Freerksen and Ellen Majewski made it a one-point game at the 4:57 mark. But from there, the Vikings broke out of their slump, scoring 10 straight points to regain command and cruise to the win.
UNO set a season low, shooting only .356 from the field. The previous low was .419 against Nebraska-Kearney. The Mavs also set a season high in turnovers, committing 25. Their previous high was 21 against both Caldwell and UNK.
Augustana did only marginally better in those departments, as it shot .409 for the game, committing 19 turnovers.
