Thies Tops 1,000 in Maverick Win

Senior guard Karen Thies scored 25 points to become the 18th Maverick to surpass 1,000 career points as UNO posted a 78-66 non-conference win over Southwest Minnesota State Tuesday night at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks improved to 12-3 with the win before resuming North Central Conference action Saturday afternoon at home against Minnesota Duluth. The Mustangs, of the Northern Sun Conference, fell to 4-11 with their seventh straight setback.
Thies scored 15 of her game-high total in the first half as the Mavericks shot 59.3 percent from the field while claiming a 43-32 lead.
The Mustangs erased the margin after the break, coming back from a 14-point deficit to tie the game at 52 with a 16-2 run on a three-pointer by Erin Oakland with 10:39 to play.
UNO, which hit just eight field goals the second half and cooled to 33.3 percent shooting, relied on a solid effort from the free throw line, hitting 17 of 20 the second half.
Erin Oakland's three-pointer and two free throws less than a minute later gave the Mustangs a brief lead, 59-57, with 6:37 to play. But UNO answered with a a 9-0 run highlighted by three-pointers by Thies and Cayla Hargrove.
Southwest Minnesota trimmed the lead to four on a three by Megan Wittkop and a layup by Abby Oakland with 1:31 to play, however UNO's eight straight free throws in the final 81 seconds put the game away.
Thies now has 1,012 points, putting her No. 17 on the career chart in just her third season as a Maverick after transferring to UNO in 2004.
Ashley Freerksen added 17 points and Hargrove 12 for UNO. Erin Oakland led the Mustangs with 18, while Wittkop scored 15 and Kady Telschow 12.
