Mutual of Omaha Stampede Opens Mav Season

Nebraska-Omaha starts the season on home ice hosting the Mutual of Omaha Stampede this weekend, meeting Manitoba in the first round on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the Qwest Center. Alabama-Huntsville and Canisius College will play at 4:05 p.m.
The first-round losers meet at 4:05 p.m. Saturday with the championship game at 7:05 p.m. The Mavericks won the tournament, which is now in its eighth year, in 2004 and 2005, and last year finished second.
For the Cure
The Mavericks have joined forces with Mutual of Omaha and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Organization (Nebraska Affiliate) to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month by raising awareness and funds for cancer research at the Qwest Center during the Mavs' first two home games. The UNO players will sport pink jerseys and socks to show their support and are encouraging all those who attend the Stampede to also wear pink.
Media Coverage
The games will be broadcast on KKAR, 1290 AM, with the pregame show beginning 20 minutes before face-off. Greg Harrington will call the action, with Terry Leahy providing color commentary. The game will also be available as a webcast on a pay-per-view basis on the B2 Network.

UNO finished the 2006-07 season 18-16-8 and finished fifth in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Manitoba is 4-6-0 on the current season, Alabama-Huntsville is starting its season on Friday, and Canisius College is 0-1-1.
The Coach
Nebraska-Omaha's Mike Kemp is in his 11th season as the Maverick head coach. Kemp is a 1975 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. The Duluth, Minn., native is 162-187-47 at UNO overall and has a 100-101-33 mark in the CCHA.
The Series
UNO has a 9-2-0 advantage over Manitoba with the last three meetings ending in shutouts and has never lost to either Canisius College (1-0-0) or Alabama-Huntsville (5-0-2).
Last Year
The Mavericks advanced to the second round of the CCHA tournament after five straight wins including the first sweep of Alaska in Fairbanks, Alaska, to match up against Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich. The eventual NCAA National Champions cut UNO's season short with 4-2 and 4-1 sweep. UNO finished the year at 18-16-8 overall.

Nebraska-Omaha will travel to Oxford, Ohio, to start its CCHA play in a two game series against cluster mate Miami. The Falcons are currently ranked 2nd in the USCHO.com/CSTV Top 20 after a season-opening sweep of Vermont.
