Mavericks Capture Stampede Title

OMAHA, Neb.-- UNO senior forward Mick Lawrence scored two goals and contributed an assist to help lead the Mavericks, 5-1, over Alabama-Huntsville in the finals of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede Saturday night at the Qwest Center Omaha.
A crowd of more than 5,000 was on hand to watch as UNO (1-0-0) recaptured the Stampede title after falling short against Northern Michigan last year. It is the third time UNO has won the annual event since its inception in 2000.
UNO struck first, with only 35 seconds remaining in the opening period junior forward Dan Charleston put the Mavericks on the scoreboard when he beat Chargers' goalie, Cameron Talbot, from a crowd in front of the net.
The Chargers tied it, 1-1, at 3:40 of the second period when UAH forward Josh Murray put a shot past the outstretched leg of UNO junior goalkeeper Jerad Kaufmann. But the Mavericks wasted little time responding, retaking the lead less than a minute later when seniors Brandon Scero and Bryan Marshall assisted on Lawrence's first goal of the night, to put the Mavs back on top, 2-1.
The Mavericks dominated the third period, padding their lead with three more goals. Freshman Mike Phillippi scored his first goal as a Maverick just two minutes into the frame. Lawrence netted his second of the game at 16:03 on an even-strength rush, and for the second night in a row, Scero added the finishing touch, scoring on the power-play at 17:41 to make it, 5-1, UNO.
Lawrence led all tournament scorers with four goals and was awarded MVP honors. Joining him on the all-tournament team were fellow Mavs; Phillippi, Kaufmann and Marshall. Marshall tied his own school record with four assists in a single game, while Kaufmann stopped 15 of the 16 shots he faced in the final against UAH.
UNO auctioned off the pink uniforms they wore during the Stampede and raised more than $10,000 for the Susan G. Komen foundation.
The Mavericks will travel to Oxford, Ohio next weekend to play a series against Central Collegiate Hockey Association cluster-mate Miami (OH) University at 6:35 p.m. Friday and 6:05 p.m. Saturday.
