Mavs Upset No. 13 Augustana in Five Games

OMAHA, Neb.-- Led by Carlie Christensen's 15 kills and five blocks, the University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team upset 13th-ranked Augustana 3-2 (30-19, 30-25, 23-30, 21-30, 15-13) in North Central Conference action Friday night before 734 fans at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
With the win, the Mavericks moved into a tie for third place in the league standings, improving to 13-8 overall and 5-4 in the NCC. Augustana fell to 16-8 and 5-4. The win also marked the first five-game victory for UNO this season after three five-game losses. The Mavericks have now won four consecutive matches.
Christensen, who hit .448 in the match, recorded four kills, including the match winner, in the decisive fifth game, while also notching two blocks.
Along with Christensen, three other Mavericks recorded double-digit kill totals, including Ellen Thommes (13), Kelli Goeser (12), and Nicole McLeod (10).
Katie Agnew directed the UNO offense to a .260 attack percentage, dishing out 49 assists while adding seven kills and six digs.
Kayla Jansen led the UNO defense with 23 digs, while Annie Rice added 12 digs and Liz Ingram 11.
UNO started out on fire, hitting .425 and .474 in the first two games, respectively. The Mavericks committed just three attacking errors in the first two games combined.
Augustana battled back in games three and four as UNO cooled down, hitting just .079 and .049.
In the decisive game, UNO outhit the Vikings .300 to .048 and never trailed.
The Mavericks will return to the Sapp Fieldhouse Saturday night for a 6 p.m. match against 12th-ranked Minnesota State, Mankato. The match will mark the final home appearance for the Mavericks' three seniors, Christensen, Agnew, and McLeod.
