Mavs Open Season with a Bang, Defeat Dana, 79-36

The University of Nebraska-Omaha women's basketball team won its season-opener for the third year in a row with a bang, defeating Dana College, 79-36, Thursday night at Sapp Fieldhouse.
Newcomer LaToya Wright led the Mavericks (1-0) with 20 points and fell one rebound short of a double-double, pulling down a team-high nine boards. She also chipped in three assists and a steal.
Amanda Brodsack, another of UNO's seven junior-college transfers, also had a strong game, scoring 13 points with six assists, four blocked shots, three steals and two rebounds. Sophomore Ashley Nelson grabbed seven boards, adding two points and four steals.
The Mavericks exploded to a 12-0 lead out of the gate, with Alyssa Green scoring eight of those points. She would finish with 13, adding six rebounds and three assists. The team would go on to lead by 20 later in the first half, but the Vikings (3-3) chipped away, cutting the deficit to 11 at the half, 37-26.
But UNO was strong to start the half again, starting with a 13-4 run to restore the 20-point advantage. Led by Wright, they kept pulling away to the finish line.
Both teams had their sloppy moments, though, as they combined for 55 turnovers - 31 by the Vikings, 24 by the Mavs.
UNO's next contest will be at Rockhurst, Saturday at 5 p.m.
