Wolverines Rally Past Mavericks

OMAHA, Neb. - Michigan scored five goals in the third period to rally past Nebraska-Omaha, 6-3, in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday night at the Qwest Center Omaha.
A physical game early, UNO got whistled for 12 penalties, nine in the second period alone, and spent a grand total of thirty-two minutes in the penalty box on the night.
The Wolverines took advantage of a UNO penalty early in the first, opening the scoring 4:30 into the period on a Kevin Porter power-play goal that snuck by UNO goalie Jeremie Dupont.
Bill Bagron was able to even the game, 1-1, 7:24 into the second stanza, scoring his first goal of the season when he beat UM goalkeeper Billy Sauer, while freshman forwad Rich Purslow gave the Mavs a 2-1 lead, scoring his first collegiate goal at 14:00 minutes of the second with assists from fellow freshman Joey Martin and Tomas Klempa, his third of the year.
Michigan came out firing in the third period, Porter scored his second goal of the night just 35 seconds into the frame to knot the score 2-2, while Chad Kolarik's goal three minutes later pushed the Wolverines out front, 3-2.
UNO's freshman defenseman Alain Goulet tied the score 3-3, scoring his first goal as a Maverick when he bounced a slapshot from the blueline off a Wolverine defenseman in front of the net and past Sauer at 4:09 of the third period, Ed Del Grosso and Dan Charleston were each credited with assists on the goal.
Steve Kampfer's goal at 7:24 of the third proved to be the game-winner for Michigan, but it was Porter's third goal of the evening and Brian Lebler's empty-netter that sealed the deal. The Wolverines were able to score five goals on just eight shots in the final period to push past the Mavericks, 6-3.
With the loss UNO falls to 1-3-0 on the season and 0-3-0 in CCHA play. Michigan, ranked Nos. 2 and 3 coming into Friday's contest, improved to
6-1-0 and 3-0-0. Both teams will go at it again Saturday night at the Qwest Center Omaha, faceoff is scheduled for 7:05.
