Alaska Avoids Sweep, Ties Nebraska-Omaha 4-4

OMAHA, Neb. - Two late goals by Alaska's Landon Novotney erased a 4-2 Nebraska-Omaha lead, and helped the Nanooks snap their seven-game slide with a 4-4 tie in Saturday night's Central Collegiate Hockey Association matchup at the Qwest Center Omaha.
With the tie UNO moved to
5-5-1 on the year and 4-5-1 in CCHA play. Alaska was able earn their first point of the year Saturday, moving to 0-7-1 and 0-5-1.
The Mavericks fell behind early in the first period of Saturday's contest, when UA's Dustin Sather beat UNO goalie Eric Aarnio at 5:10 to grab an early 1-0 advantage.
But it was UNO that caught fire late in the first frame, tying the game, 1-1, 18:41 into the period on a Tomas Klempa goal from the slot in front of the Alaska net. Rich Purslow and Dan Charleston were each credited with an assist on the score.
Just 19 seconds after Klempa's goal, Nick Fanto was able to split the Nanook defense and score on a breakaway to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead after one period. Bill Bagron and Alain Goulet assisted on the goal.
The Mavs' continued their tear in the second, Charleston pushed the lead to
3-1 when he deflected a Goulet slapshot from the point past Nanook goalkeeper Wylie Rogers 8:07 into the stanza. Bryan Marshall also picked up an assist on the score.
Brandon Scero got in on the action a minute and a half later, as he capped the scoring for UNO and gave the Mavericks a 4-1 lead at 9:37 of the second when he beat Rogers from the circle. Joey Martin and Eric Olimb got credit for the assists.
UA's Adam Naglich was able to cut into the UNO lead, scoring at 10:51 of the second to make it 4-2 before the second intermission.
The Mavericks controlled play for most of the third, only to see their lead slip away with less than five minutes remaining. UA's Landon Novotney led the Nanooks' rally, scoring twice in a little over three minutes to knot the game, 4-4, and send it to overtime.
UNO put four shots on goal in the extra frame, but were unable to get anything past Rogers. Aarnio was equally solid for the Mavericks, denying the Nanooks only attempt in overtime.
The Mavericks travel to South Bend, Ind. next weekend to play a two-game series against No. 9 Notre Dame on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Faceoff for Friday's match is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CST, while Saturday's contest is set for 6:05 p.m. CST.
