Mavs Suffer First Loss to Central Missouri
Nov 30, 2007 | Women's Basketball
The University of Nebraska-Omaha women's basketball team shot a season-low 34 percent, suffering its first loss of the season, 70-56, to Central Missouri Friday night in the Downtown DoubleTree Classic at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks (5-1) and Jennies (3-2) battled back and forth through the first 11 minutes of the game. But after a layup by UNO's Alyssa Green put the Mavs up 20-19, neither team hit a shot for more than three minutes. Once a jumper by UCM's Dominica Blakemore broke the drought, the Jennies went on a 13-0 run, leading 32-20 with 2:22 left in the half. They would hold a 34-24 lead at the break, despite posting only a .370 shooting percentage themselves.
Six minutes into the second half the Mavs finally found their touch, as a three-point play by LaToya Wright sparked a 14-2 run that got the teams even at 43-43. But shortly after, UNO's shots stopped falling while UCM got hot again, going on a 13-2 run of its own, never looking back.
Amanda Brodsack and Ellen Majewski led the Mavericks with 12 points each, with Green adding 11. Majewski and Cayla Hargrove each went 2-for-4 from 3-point range, but the team's shooting from beyond the arc was one of its deficiencies on the night, as UNO went 4-for-19 overall, starting off 0-for-11.
UCM's Lindsey Maple was the game's leading scorer with 24, including a 13-for-15 performance at the free-throw line.
Wright and Brodsack led all players with eight rebounds each, as UNO once again owned the glass, holding a 44-35 advantage.
The Mavericks conclude the tournament Saturday night at 7, taking on regional rival Metro State. The Roadrunners suffered a 76-60 defeat to Minnesota State, Mankato, earlier Friday.
