Lincoln Catcher Signs with Mavericks

Lincoln North Star High School catcher Jake Benne has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Nebraska at Omaha next fall and play baseball for the Mavericks, head coach Bob Herold announced today.
Benne (pronounced Benney) batted .352 and drove in 53 runs last year as a junior for North Star and .375 with 26 stolen bases in the summer for his Anderson Ford team under coach Lanny Bolles.
The right-handed hitting Benne was an all-state honorable mention selection in both 2006 and 2007 after earning all-city honors both years. He was the co-most valuable player for North Star last year and was named to the Cornhusker League all-star team.
He is the son of Jeff and Fran Benne and Denise Reikofski of Lincoln. His stepmother (Fran TenBensel) set several records at Nebraska-Lincoln in track and cross country.
Benne is the second player to sign a national letter of intent with the Mavericks during the early-signing period. Brady Hohl, a shortstop at Millard North High School signed in November.
