Mavericks Roll Past Minnesota State, 6-3

OMAHA, Neb. -- Nebraska-Omaha scored a team-record five power-play goals as they topped Minnesota State, 6-3, in a non-conference tilt Tuesday evening at the Qwest Center Omaha.
Freshman defenseman Nick Von Bokern and senior forward Mick Lawrence scored two goals apiece to pace UNO's offensive attack, while Junior Jerad Kaufmann turned away 25 MSU shots helping the Mavericks improve to 7-8-3 on the season.
The Mavericks fell behind just 54 seconds into the opening period, but were able to tie the game, 1-1, on a Von Bokern power-play goal at 4:04 of the first. Von Bokern hammered a slapshop from the blueline past MSU goalie Mike Zacharias to record his first goal as a Mav. Freshmen forwards Joey Martin and Rich Purslow each got an assist on the goal.
Just as they had in the first, the Mavs fell into an early hole in the second period. MSU forward Zach Harrison scored a shorthanded marker at 1:17 of the stanza beating UNO goalkeeper Jerad Kaufmann to give MSU a 2-1 advantage.
Bryan Marshall evened things, 2-2, two minutes later and Lawrence's power-play score at 19:30 of the second gave the Mavs the lead, 3-2, heading into the second intermission. Mike Phillippi collected the lone assist on Marshall's goal, while Eddie Del Grosso and Marshall got helpers on Lawrence's.
UNO pushed their lead 5-2 in the third frame. Von Bokern scored his second goal of the night, a power-play goal at 2:10, with assist from Alain Goulet and Purslow, while Brandon Scero's power-play goal at 12:55 gave UNO a three goal advantage, Del Grosso and Marshall each got assist on the goal.
Minnesota State cut into the Maverick lead at 16:30 of the third to pull within two on Harrison's second score of the night, but the Mavericks pushed the lead back up to three less than a minute later. Lawrence netted his second goal of the night on the power play at 17:23 of the third to cap the scoring for the Mavs. Scero and Marshall assisted on the goal.
The victory over Minnesota State is the Mavs first since the 2001-02 season and marks just the sixth time in 21 meetings between the two schools that the Mavericks have come away with the win.
The team gets the next ten days off before they return to action on Dec. 28 when Yale visits the Qwest Center Omaha for a non-conference match with face off scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CST.
