The Mavericks used a 17-point run in the second half to pull away from Newman Wednesday night at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse for a 77-59 non-conference win, pushing their record to 11-1 to match their best start to a season in school history. Cayla Hargrove's 14 points led four players in double figures for UNO.
UNO, which also opened last season 11-1, will now head to Hawaii for a three-game trip Dec. 29-31, beginning with a match-up with Brigham Young-Hawaii.
Newman, which fell to 1-8, battled the Mavericks on nearly even terms, trailing 31-27 at halftime and pulling within three twice in the second half.
But UNO turned up the heat after the Jets' Tara Oppliger connected to slice the margin to 33-30 with 18:12 to play. Ashley Nelson started the run with a layup with 18:04 left and Latoya Wright capped the surge with a layup 3:42 later for a 50-30 lead. Wright scored five and Alyssa Green four during the stretch.
Newman never got closer than 17 points thereafter, and UNO enjoyed its largest lead, 59-35, with 10:17 to play.
Green finished with 12, Wright with 10 and Mary Brown with 11 points for UNO. Dava Logsdon and Gretchen Berns each scored 14 points to lead Newman.
