Princeton Charges Past Mavericks, 5-3

OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha gave up four third-period goals as they fell to Princeton, 5-3, in non-conference play Sunday night at the Qwest Center Omaha.
The Mavericks dropped both games in their weekend series against ECAC opponents, losing, 6-3, to Yale on Friday before falling to Princeton Sunday night. Sunday's loss sends UNO to 7-10-3 on the year. The Mavs will kick off the New Year with a series against Central Collegiate Hockey Association foe, Western Michigan, on Jan. 5-6 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
After a scoreless opening frame, it only took UNO 40 seconds to get on the board in the second. Senior Mick Lawrence scored his team-leading eleventh goal of the season on the powerplay, sending a one-timer past Princeton's goalie Thomas Sychterz. Bryan Marshall and Dan Charleston each got an assist on the score.
Princeton came back and squared the game, 1-1, a little more than a minute later when Dan Bartlett beat UNO goalkeeper Jeremie Dupont 1:45 into the second period.
Dan Swanson gave the Mavs a 2-1 lead heading into the second intermission when he scored an even-strength marker at 16:24 of the second. JJ Koehler and Juha Uotila assisted on the score.
The third period belonged to the Tigers. Princeton came out and tied the game 4:49 into the third stanza on a Landis Stankievech power-play goal, and took a 3-2 lead on a Taylor Fedun power-play goal at 8:50.
The Mavericks bounced right back and evened things up, 3-3, less than a minute later on a Brandon Scero goal at 9:35. Lawrence and Uotila got helpers on the marker.
But it was Princeton's Mark Magnowski's shorthanded goal at 15:15 of the third that proved to be the difference, putting the Tigers up 4-3, and giving them the lead for good. Princeton's Mike Moore iced the game for the Tigers when he put in an empty-netter from center ice with just 26 seconds left in the frame, pushing the Tigers' lead to 5-3.
UNO's series against Western Michigan is set to face off at 6:35 p.m. CST on Jan. 5, with the second game on Sunday Jan. 6, scheduled for 3:05 p.m. CST.
