Mavericks And Lakers Tie Again

OMAHA, Neb. -- Nebraska-Omaha senior forward Bryan Marshall scored two goals, including the game-tying goal late in the third period, to help the Mavericks salvage a 3-3 tie against Lake Superior State in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action Saturday night at the Qwest Center Omaha.
The tie moves the Mavs to 5-7-3 overall and 4-7-3 in CCHHA play, while the Lakers are now 2-11-3 and 0-8-2.
The Mavericks jumped on the Lakers early, taking a 1-0 lead on a Joey Martin power play goal 5:12 into the opening period. Forward Matt Ambroz intercepted a Laker pass in the neutral zone and found an open Martin who was able to split the defense and beat LSSU goalie Brian Mahoney-Wilson to record his third goal of the season.
Lake Superior State evened the score, 1-1, on a Simon Gysbers goal at 6:10 of the second stanza.
UNO came right back and retook the lead three minutes later with their second power play goal of the night, Marshall's first of the evening, to put the Mavs back on top, 2-1. Dan Charleston and Eddie Del Grosso each got an assist on the goal.
The Lakers were able to tie the game two-all before the second intermission when Nathan Perkovich beat UNO goalkeeper Jerad Kaufmann on a power play with only eight seconds remaining in the period.
LSSU came out fast in the third period, taking the lead on a Will Acton score 5:38 into the frame.
The Mavericks fought back and were able to knot the score, 3-3, when Marshall tipped a Charleston shot from the point past Mahoney-Wilson for his second goal of the night with just five minutes left in the third. Del Grosso picked up the other assist on the score.
The Mavs successfully killed off a Laker powerplay in the extra frame, but were unable find the net in overtime, and for the second night in a row the match ended in a tie.
The Mavericks out shot the Lakers 36-32. UNO goaltender Jerad Kaufmann turned away 29 LSSU shots, while Mahoney-Wilson ended the evening with 33 saves.
It was the fourth-consecutive overtime game between the Mavs and Lakers, with both games going into extra time last season as well.
The Mavericks will travel to Schenectady, N.Y. next weekend for a two-game series with Union on Dec. 14-15. Both matches are set for 6 p.m. CST.
