UNO Lights Up Minnesota State, 102-80

Nebraska-Omaha senior Karen Thies scored a career-high 36 points, including seven 3-pointers, leading UNO to a 102-80 North Central Conference victory over Minnesota State, Mankato, Saturday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse.
UNO (15-8, 3-6 NCC), shot a blistering 65.6 percent in the first, with Thies scoring 14. Minnesota State started strong as well, holding the score close through the first 13 minutes of play. UNO got even hotter in the final seven minutes, turning a 33-33 tie into a 52-37 advantage at halftime.
The visitors scored nine of the first 14 points of the second half, cutting the deficit to eight points. But with freshman guards Tara Abbott and Alyssa running a smooth offense and Thies raining down shots, the host Mavericks maintained a 20-plus point lead for a good part of the second half.
Abbott finished with a season-best 10 assists, while Green collected seven. Green, Lacey Geitzenauer, Cayla Hargrove and Jill Wolf tied for the team lead in rebounds with five each for UNO.
Ashley Freerksen added 14 points, with Green scoring nine.
Alex Andrews led Minnesota State with 18 points, with Heather Johnson adding 14, and Joanne Noreen 13.
UNO returns to action next Saturday with another NCC contest, taking on No. 2 North Dakota.
