Maverick Rally Falls Short of Buckeyes
Feb 16, 2007 | Hockey
Ohio State built a 4-goal lead, then withstood a furious third-period assault by the Mavericks to claim a 4-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association win over UNO in front of 7,814 at Omaha Civic Auditorium Friday night. The teams will complete their two-game series Saturday night at 8:05.
Ohio State (13-13-5, 11-10-4) moved into sole possession of fifth place, while the Mavericks (13-14-8, 10-11-4) slipped into seventh place behind Western Michigan in the CCHA race.
The Buckeyes scored twice in the first, added another in the second and then went up by 4-0 just 2:43 into the third period before the Mavericks could answer. UNO's all-time leading scorer, Scott Parse, scored his 22nd and 23rd goals at 9:05 and 11:39 and then Alex Nikiforuk slammed his 11th of the season past OSU goalie Joseph Palmer at 16:27 on a power play.
But Palmer and the Buckeyes withstood another power play by the Mavericks in the final 50 seconds to secure the win.
OSU's Andrew Schembri scored his eighth of the year out of a goal-mouth scramble to open scoring at the 10:03 mark. Corey Elkins then scored his fourth on a power play to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead after a period.
Tyson Strachan rifled a shot past UNO goalie Jeremie Dupont at 15:05 of the second for a 3-0 OSU lead. Kyle Hood made it 4-0 2:43 into the third.
Parse, with assists from Mike Eickman and Bryan Marshall, finally broke the ice for the Mavericks. He added his second goal just 2:34 later on a pass from Marshall.
Dupont kept the Mavs in the game when he made a butterfly save on a breakaway attempt by Tommy Goebel minutes later. After OSU's Sean Collins went to the box for interference at 16:02, Dupont left the ice for an extra attacker, giving the Mavericks a 5-on-3 edge. Nikiforuk found the lower left corner of the net from the left circle at 16:27. Marshall and Dan Charleston drew the assists.
