Tigers Tame Mavericks in Two 5-2 Games

HAYS, Kan. -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha baseball team opened its season with two losses, dropping both ends of a doubleheader against Fort Hays State by identical 5-2 scores Thursday.
UNO took a 2-1 lead in the third inning of game one on back-to-back RBI singles by junior Matt Boro and sophomore Evan Porter. But the Tigers (3-3) roughed up senior pitcher Bryan Hauck (0-1) for four runs on four hits in the fourth. Bobby Lewton (1-1) tossed a seven-inning complete game for Fort Hays State, allowing just the two runs on eight hits, with no walks and five strikeouts. Porter and sophomore Brian Goliber had two hits each.
Tigers pitcher Jarrod King (1-1) didn't allow a hit in his five innings of work to start the second game. A Bryan Frew single leading off the sixth broke up the no-hitter. But it wasn't until the seventh, already trailing 5-0, that UNO got on the board. Sophomore Tyler Cloyd had an RBI double and scored on a groundout by Boro. Senior starter Josh Lundin (0-1) took the loss for UNO, giving up two runs in three innings.
The Mavericks resume play Friday with another doubleheader at Regis, starting at 11 a.m. Mountain time.
