Mavs Drop Two to Regis in Rarified Air

DENVER -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha baseball team is still winless after being swept in a doubleheader by Regis, 15-10 and 9-6, Friday afternoon at the Regis Baseball Field.
Game one of the twin-bill was a slugfest, as one might expect in the Mile High City. Eight home runs were hit, four by each team. Mavericks sophmore Casey Klapperich had a two-run blast in the top of the second. Unfortunatly, Tyler Hageman and Sean Chase tagged UNO starter Blake Denoyer for long balls in the first, highlighting a four-run inning.
The Rangers (6-5) scored single runs in each the second through fifth innings for an 8-2 lead, including another solo shot by Hageman leading off the fourth. Tyler Cloyd had an RBI double in the sixth for the Mavs, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Klapperick, cutting the deficit to 8-4. But Chase answered with his second homer of the game in the bottom of the inning, making it 10-4.
Junior Matt Eikmeier hit solo blast in the top of the seventh, but Regis put up another four-spot, making the score 14-5. Junior Chris Weimer homered to lead off the eighth, then smashed a three-run shot in the eighth, but the Mavs couldn't overcome the big deficit.
Denoyer (0-1) took the loss, while Regis starter Craig Deaver (2-1) picked up the win, allowing five runs on 10 hits in seven innings.
The second game, shortened to seven innings, was an error-filled affair, but saw UNO jump out to a 4-0 lead at the end of two innings. Sophomore Evan Porter had a run-scoring groundout in the first. Then junior Bryan Frew, who had doubled, scored on an error. In the second, senior Alex Kotera had an RBI double, then scored on a single by Frew.
The Rangers answered back for three runs in the third, but UNO took two of them back in the fourth on a two-run single by Cloyd. Regis took one back in the bottom of the inning, making the score 6-4 in favor of the Mavs. But the home team exploded for five runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run homer by James Walker and three UNO errors.
The Mavericks committed five errors in the game, while Regis had three miscues. Eric Anderson (2-1) got the win, giving up six runs, three earned, on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings. Derek Brym notched his fourth save, tossing the last inning and a third. Shawn Smith (0-1) took the hard-luck loss, surrendering five runs, but only one earned, in one inning of work.
UNO and Regis play another doubleheader Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. Mountain time.
