UNO Falls to Minnesota State, 90-76

MANKATO, Minn. -- Minnesota State shot 56 percent from the field the second half and avenged an earlier loss to UNO, posting a 90-76 decision Saturday at Bresnan Arena. The Mavericks will now face Augustana in the first round of the NCC post-season tournament Wednesday night in Sioux Falls, S.D.
UNO fell to 15-11 overall and 3-9 in the North Central Conference, while MSU improved to 16-11 and 4-8. UNO defeated MSU in Omaha on Feb. 10, 102-80.
MSU never trailed and slowly pulled away from the Mavericks in building a 40-30 halftime edge.
UNO fell behind by 14 in the opening minutes of the second half before rallying by scoring eight straight points. Karen Thies hit a three-pointer, followed by a two and Ashley Freerksen capped the run by tossing in a three to slice the margin to 46-40 with 17:23 to play.
But Minnesota State answered that by holding UNO scoreless for over two and a half minutes and to just one field goal over a 3:22 stretch to take a 54-43 lead.
Cayla Hargrove's three-point play with 13:25 left helped UNO to once more trim the gap to six, 56-50, but that was the Mavericks' last rally. MSU's Heather Johnson scored eight points in a 10-0 run for a 66-50 lead with 11:47 left.
Freshman guard Alyssa Green led UNO with a career-high 21 points and four assists. Thies added 17 points and nine rebounds and Cayla Hargroved and Ashley Nelson each scored 10. Alex Andrews led four MSU players in double figures with 17 points.
