Mavs Return Favor, Sweep Regis in Doubleheader
Feb 24, 2007 | Baseball
DENVER -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha baseball overcame deficits of four and six runs to sweep a doubleheader from Regis, 9-5 and 10-9 Saturday afternoon at the Regis Baseball Field.
Game one saw Regis (6-7) get an early jump on the Mavericks (2-4) once again, taking advantage of two errors to score four first-inning runs. But UNO got two runs back in the top of the fifth. Junior Matt Eikmeier had an RBI single, driving in junior Matt Boro, with sophomore Brian Goliber also scoring on an error.
The Mavericks broke through in the next inning for four runs, started off by a leadoff homer by sophomore Evan Porter. Sophomore Tyler Cloyd added a run-scoring single, as did Eikmeier. Another run scored on a wild pitch. Eikmeier's fourth hit of the game, a single in the eighth, also gave him three runs batted in, giving UNO an insurance run, 8-4. Regis answered for one run in the eighth, but the Mavs tacked on one more in the ninth with Cloyd scoring on a passed ball.
Redshirt freshman Brandon Dahl (1-0) earned the win, tossing two innings in relief, allowing just one hit. Seniors Bryan Hauck and Shawn Smith nailed it down, combining to allow just one run on four hits in the final four innings. Rangers starter Greg Schaer (0-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in five innings.
Regis got off to another blazing start in the seven-inning second game, scoring six runs on UNO starter Brandon Rinne. Wildness was a factor, as Rinne issued five walks and two wild pitches, giving up four hits.
But the Mavericks wasted no time getting their starter off the hook, plating seven runs in the top of the second. Junior Tim Huber walked, took second on a wild pitch and went to third on a single by sophomore Casey Klapperich. Sophomore Nate Love's fly ball to center was dropped, allowing Huber to score, with Love getting credit for a sacrifice fly and RBI. Junior Matt Meyer was hit by pitch to load the bases. Eikmeier reached on an infield single, scoring one, keeping the bases juiced, setting up a two-run single by junior Bryan Frew. Porter followed with another run-scoring single, then Cloyd added a run-scoring groundout. Huber drove in the last run of the inning with another single.
Meyer added a run in the third in unconvential fashion. He singled with one out, stole second, went to third on an error, then stole home for an 8-6 UNO lead. Cloyd hit is first home of the year with one out in the fourth - a solo blast - and Klapperich added a sac fly.
Senior Ryan Lafountain (1-0) got the win, allowing one run on just one hit in three innings, while striking out five. Senior Jason Peterson earned his first save, tossing the final three innings, also allowing one run on one hit. Regis starter Brennan Bonati (1-1) took the loss. In his two and one-third innings of work, he was responsible for eight runs, but only one earned, on seven hits.
With the tough opening stretch of the season out of the way, the Mavericks are off until Friday. They play in a weekend tournament at Central Missouri, starting with a game against Bemidji State at 11 a.m.
