Season Ends With Quarterfinal Loss to Huskies

ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha men's basketball team saw its season come to an end in the first round of the North Central Conference tournament at St. Cloud State for the second year in a row, as the Huskies took advantage of a poor shooting night by the Mavericks, winning 63-52 Wednesday night at Hallenbeck Hall.
UNO, which finishes the season with a 12-16 record, hit only 18-of-50 shot attempts on the night, for 36 percent. The Mavs hit less than 31 percent for the first half, resulting in a 33-20 deficit. The Huskies (19-9) started the game with a 12-4 run in the first five minutes. A layup by Michael Jenkins got the Mavs within three points at 23-20 with 4:40 remaining, but UNO couldn't score a point the rest of the half, while Matt Schneck scored twice inside for St. Cloud State, and David Dreas and Kelly Byrne dropped 3-pointers, resulting in 10 straight points and a 13-point halftime lead.
The Mavericks' shooting improved slightly in the second half, and three minutes into it, went on a 9-0 run that cut their deficit all the way down to two points. Trailing 39-28 with about 17 minutes left, Jenkins hit two free throws to start the run. Jerry Bennett scored from inside, then Keith Price scored from outside, hitting a 3-pointer, then inside on a jumper in the paint to make it 39-37.
But after UNO's run, the Huskies went on a 13-3 run to restore the double-digit lead and would lead by no less than nine the rest of the way.
Jenkins scored a team-high 20 points for UNO, including 14 in the second half. Price had 10 and tied with Denny Johnston for the team lead in rebounds with seven. The Mavericks' leading scorer on the year, Zac Robinson, was held to three points.
Dreas led St. Cloud State with 23 points, while Schneck scored 10 with seven boards.
