Mavericks Upset No. 13 Augustana, 64-61

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Senior guard Karen Thies scored 20 points, with four coming in the final 25 seconds, to lead the Mavericks to a 64-61 upset win over No. 13 Augustana Wednesday night in the first round of the North Central Conference post-season tournament.
UNO will now play South Dakota at 1 p.m. Saturday in Grand Forks, N.D., in the tournament semifinals. The Mavericks are 16-11 on the year, while the Vikings fall to 25-6.
The Mavericks surged to a 13-3 lead in the opening minutes before the Vikings rebounded to claim a 22-21 advantage with 6:23 left in the first half. UNO then used a 7-point run in the closing minutes to take a 35-29 lead into the break.
Augustana came back to take its first lead of the second half at 39-37 with 14:31 left on Alison Adamson's layup, but the lead changed hands four times as the teams headed for the stretch.
The Vikings matched their largest lead when Adamson connected on a pair of free shots with 4:37 left for a 54-51 edge.
The Mavericks tied the game a minute later on Thies' three-pointer to start a 7-0 run. With 3:06 left Lacey Geitzenauer gave UNO the lead, 56-54 on a layuup and Thies capped the run with a jumper with 1:41 left for a 58-54 UNO lead.
Augustana never led again. Amy Puthoff hit a three with 1:28 left to close within a point, 58-57, but UNO freshman Alyssa Green went coast-to-coast with 54 seconds left for a 60-57 advantage.
The Vikings' Ashley Holiday knocked down a pair of free shots with 39 seconds left, but Thies answered with a layup with 25 seconds left. The Vikings drew within 62-61 on Adamson's layup with nine seconds remaining, however Thies restored the three-point lead with two free throws with five seconds left. Andrea Walsh's long three-point attempt at the buzzer missed a chance for overtime for the Vikings, who dropped two of three to the Mavericks this season.
Besides Thies, Green scored 13 points and added five assists and Cayla Hargrove 10 points and five reobunds. Thies hit 7 of 15 shots from the field, including 4 of 6 from behind the arc, to go with five rebounds. The Vikings, held to just 28.8 percent shooting from the field for the game, were led by Adamson's 16 points.
