Michigan State Cuts Maverick Season Short, 4-1

EAST LANSING, Mich.- Michigan State ended the Mavericks' hopes of making it to Joe Louis Arena in Saturday night's second game of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association quarterfinals, upending UNO, 4-1, to sweep the best-of-three series.
Nebraska-Omaha ended the season 18-16-8 overall and 13-11-4 in the CCHA.
Michigan State shut the Mavericks out in the first period, 2-0. The first goal came at 15:06 from MSU's Tim Crowder on a breakaway and at 16:46 Tim Kennedy netted a power-play marker.
Senior forward Alex Nikiforuk cut the Spartans' lead in half at 7:10 on an odd-man rush beating MSU goalie Jeff Lerg glove side, the single assist went to fellow senior, defenseman Mike Eickman.
Spartans extended its lead in the third stanza to three with its second power-play goal of the night coming from Chris Mueller. Jim McKenzie finished off the night with an empty-net goal at 19:58
