Smith Saves the Day for Mavericks

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Shawn Smith earned the save in both ends of a doubleheader as the University of Nebraska-Omaha swept Fort Hays State, 4-3 and 4-2, Sunday afternoon at Phil Welch Stadium.
UNO (7-8) starters turned in solid games, only to get into a late jam, but the senior Smith was there both times to close out the game.
Sophomore Ryan Hines took the hill in game one and held the Tigers (10-5) to just one hit in the first five innings. With a 4-0 lead, he allowed the first two batters to reach base in the top of the sixth with one run coming in. Smith came on and surrendered an RBI double, then a sacrifice fly to see the Mavericks' lead dwindle to 4-3. But Smith worked out of the inning, then shut down Fort Hays State in the seventh to end the game.
Chris Weimer started the scoring for UNO with a two-run single up the middle in the first, driving in Bryan Frew and Evan Porter, who each singled. Alex Kotera drove in a run in the second with a two-out knock. Porter drove in the Mavs' last run in the fifth with a double.
Junior Tim Huber also took a one-hitter late into the game, getting all the way to the final inning. With another 4-0 UNO lead, Huber surrended a single and two-run homer to open the seventh. Mavericks coach Bob Herold stuck with the lefty, but after Huber allowed consecutive one-out walks, he called on Smith again. The closer quickly nailed down the game with a strike out and fly ball.
Weimer again drove in two runs in the first inning, this time with a double to the gap in left-center. Matt Meyer had an RBI single in the second, as did Frew in the fourth.
The Mavericks will be spending their spring break in Fort Myers, Fla. for the Gene Cusic Classic, playing games Wednesday through Saturday. All games will be broadcast over Teamline.
