Maverick Bats Belt Ashland, 13-4

FT. MEYERS, Fla. -- Bryan Frew drove in four runs to lead a 16-hit attack and three Maverick pitchers combined to fan 12 batters Wednesday as UNO opened a five-game tour of Florida in the Gene Cusic Classic with a 13-4 win over Ashland.

UNO, now 8-8, spotted Ashland a 3-0 lead before getting its offense into gear. The Mavs sliced the gap to 3-2, fell back to 4-2 in the fifth, then struck for a six-run inning, added two more in the sixth and three in the eighth.
Frew drove in two with a fifth-inning double, another with a single in the sixth and capped his 3-for-4 day with a solo homer in the eighth.
Chris Weimer, Alex Kotera and Matt Boro collected two hits and two RBIs apiece. Weimer's came with a two-run homer in the eighth.
Winning pitcher Tyler Cloyd (2-1) struck out six in six innings of work, Blake Denoyer added four strikeouts in two innings and Shawn Smith fanned two in the final inning.
Matt Meyer also had two hits, stole two bases and scored twice.
