No. 6 ranked Emporia State outlasted UNO with a 10-inning, 2-0 win Wednesday at Claussen-Westgate Field to spoil the Mavericks' home opener. The second game was called because of rain and lightning with the score tied, 3-3, in the bottom of the fifth. It will not be made up.
No. 21 UNO is now 7-6 before playing a doubleheader Thursday at Northwest Missouri State at 2 p.m. Emporia State is 22-7.
April Huddleston's one-out single in the top of the 10th scored both runs. Jennifer Dace was put on second base to start the 10th and Courtney Stevens laid down a sacrifice bunt. UNO catcher Brianna Cataudella tried to get Dace at third, but the throw was late. Morgan Viola advanced Stevens to second when she grounded out to the pitcher and Huddleston followed with the base hit.
UNO started the bottom of the 10th with Brooke Wagner on second base, but Emporia State pitcher Courtney Reed got Amanda Bader to fly out to center and then fanned Cataudella. Chanel Reaves followed with a single past the shortstop, but lead-off hitter Alison Jergenson flied out to left to end the game.
Maverick pitcher Taren Kirk and Reed engaged in a tight pitching duel all the way. Kirk didn't allow a runner past first base until the ninth and at one point retired 14 straight. Reed struck out eight and walked just one and allowed UNO to reach second just twice in the first eight innings.
Kirk fanned four and walked just two.
In the second game, Reaves, Jergenson and Treighton Yates each drove in runs for UNO. Megan Davison belted a home run and Miranda Campbell tied the game in the top of the fifth with a two-run triple.
