Big Early Innings Lead Washburn Over Mavs in DH

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn University scored early in each game of its doubleheader against the University of Nebraska-Omaha, sweeping the games 5-1 and 5-4 Wednesday at Falley Field.
In game one, the Ichabods (7-8) took advantage of a costly error in the second inning to score three unearned runs off UNO starter Tyler Cloyd (2-2). Washburn would add two more in the fifth for a 5-0 lead. Bryan Stroth (2-1) went six innings for the Ichabods, allowing just one run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Matt Eikmeier.
Washburn got off to another early lead in the second game. The Ichabods pushed across one run in the first inning. The first three batters in the second reached base, then Wes Joy brought them all in with a grand slam, his first longball of the season. UNO starter Josh Lundin was charged with all five runs for the loss, dropping him to 1-3, while the team fell to 9-13.
The Mavs nearly got their starter off the hook, rallying for four runs. Speedster Matt Meyer scored in the third inning on a passed ball, with Evan Porter driving in a run with a ground ball later that inning. Casey Klapperich scored in the fourth on a wild pitch. Porter blasted a solo homer with one out in the top of the seventh off Washburn closer Brian Shively, but the retired the next two batters to end the game.
The Mavericks will visit Missouri Southern for two games Thursday and one Friday before taking the weekend off. All three games against the Lions will be played with wood bats. Two years ago the Mavs played 16 contests with wood, winning all of them.
