Svoboda 's 5 RBIs Lead Mavs to Sweep

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Leslie Svoboda collected four hits and drove in five runs Thursday and Brooke Wagner singled home the winning run in the top of the seventh of the second game as the Mavericks edged Northwest Missouri State, 4-3 and 5-4, in a non-conference doubleheader at Bearcat Field.
UNO improved to 9-6 with the sweep, while the Bearcats fell to 10-6. The Mavericks' next action will be Sunday in Joplin, Mo., facing Missouri Southern and Northeastern.
In the first game, Svoboda singled in a run in the first, doubled home a run in the Mavs' two-run third and plated the winning run with a bunt in the sixth that scored catcher Beth Harris.
That gave UNO a 4-0 lead, but the Bearcats rallied to score three times in the bottom of the seventh on two singles, a walk and an error. Cheris Kuster (4-2) went the distance, fanning seven, and ended the threat by inducing Cortney Channel to pop out to second baseman Kellyn Kramolisch.
The Mavericks built an early lead in the nightcap with a three-run first, taking advantage of four Bearcat errors. Svoboda drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Northwest Missouri State scored a run in the second before Svoboda belted her second home run of the year in the fifth for a 4-1 lead. But the Bearcats came back, scoring twice in the fifth and tying in the sixth on a homer by Erin Leslie.
In the UNO seventh, Treighton Yates singled and advanced to second when Sara Sortino was hit by a pitch. Shortstop Wagner's single to left scored Yates for a 5-4 lead. The Bearcats threatened with two singles in the bottom of the seventh before Melissa Negrete relieved starter Taren Kirk and got Channell to ground into a game-ending double play.
