Mavericks Earn Split

JOPLIN, Mo. - The Mavericks scored four times in the first two innings, then held off Missouri Southern for a 5-4 victory, but were held to just 3 hits in a 1-0, eight-inning loss to Northeastern (Okla.) State Sunday in a non-conference doubleheader.
The Mavs are now 10-7 before hosting North Central Conference rival South Dakota in a Tuesday doubleheader at Claussen-Westgate Field at 2 p.m.
Leslie Svoboda singled in a run and scored on an error in the top of the first inning of the opener for a quick 2-0 lead. Kellyn Kramolisch scored on a bases-loaded walk and Svoboda scored on an infield error in the second to double the lead to 4-0.
The Lions scored a run in the fourth, but the Mavericks answered with an RBI double by Kramolisch in the fifth. Missouri Southern added two runs in the bottom of the fifth and another in the seventh on Kayleigh Cecil's third RBI of the day with two out.
Cheris Kuster earned her fifth win of the season, striking out six. Alison Jergenson collected four hits and scored twice.
In the second game, the Mavericks left runners stranded at third base in the second, third, seventh and eighth innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Northeastern (21-5) loaded the bases with no one out. Third baseman Svoboda threw out a runner at the plate, but Rachael Christian followed with a single to left to score the winning run.
UNO starter, freshman Melissa Negrete, pitched the first seven innings, yielding four hits.
