Mavs Sweep Hornets, 4-1 and 5-4

OMAHA -- Tyler Cloyd tossed a three-hit complete game, then a game-tying home run from Evan Porter and a strong bullpen led the University of Nebraska-Omaha baseball team to a sweep in a nonconference doubleheader against Emporia State, 4-1 and 5-4, Tuesday afternoon at Boys Town.
The Mavericks improve to 11-13 on the season, while the Hornets fall to 15-12.
Cloyd (3-2) went the distance in the first game of the twin-bill, allowing just three hits and one run, coming on a first-inning sacrifice fly. But the Mavericks offense was held in check until the fifth inning, when Porter tied the game with an RBI double down the left-field line.
Chris Weimer gave UNO the lead in the sixth with a run-scoring triple, then coming home on a single by Brian Goliber. Bryan Frew, who went 3-for-3, tacked on an insurance run with a single to left.
The Mavs found themselves in early trouble in the second game, facing a 4-1 deficit going into the bottom of the third. But Porter tied the game up with one mighty swing, sending a three-run homer over the left-center field fence, his third longball of the season.
Porter scored the go-ahead run in the fifth, singling with two outs, advancing to second on a wild pitch, then scoring on a single by Cloyd.
Meanwhile, Bryan Hauck (2-1) turned in a stellar performance in relief, allowing just two hits and one walk in three and two-thirds innings, striking out seven.
Shawn Smith earned his fifth save of the year, nailing the game down in the seventh, despite allowing back-to-back two-out singles.
The Mavericks are scheduled to play their next six games on their home field, but are off until next Tuesday when they host Washburn for a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
