Mavericks Split Sunday Series

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha baseball team split a pair of games Sunday at the Holiday Inn Express Tournament hosted by Central Missouri, sliding past Bemidji State 3-2, before falling to Upper Iowa in a slugfest, 20-11, at Crane Stadium.
UNO (3-6) struck first against Bemidji State (0-7) with two runs in the second inning. Alex Kotera drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Matt Boro later scored on an error. Brian Goliber added a run, which proved to be the game-winner, in the fourth inning with a solo home run, his first of the year.
Josh Lundin (1-1) earned his first win of the year, going five and two-thirds innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits, striking out four and walking four. Shawn Smith earned his first save, recording the last four outs, allowing only one baserunner on a walk, striking out two.
The Mavericks' second game of the day, against Upper Iowa, saw 31 runs cross the plate and 33 hits, plus five errors. The Peacocks (2-3) scored two in the first, only to have UNO answer back for three in the second. Chris Weimer and Boro started the inning with back-to-back home runs, with Bryan Frew adding an RBI single. The Mavs added two more in the third on a double by Casey Klapperich and a single from Kotera. Klapperich drove in another run in the fourth getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
But Upper Iowa exploded for four runs each in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, giving the Peacocks a 15-6 lead. The Mavs put up a five-spot in the eighth. Kotera started it with an RBI single, then Matt Eikmeier had a run-scoring double, Evan Porter also drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch, and Tyler Cloyd had a two-run single.
The Peacocks put up five of their own in the bottom of the inning for the final scoring.
Ryan Hines (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits and a walk, in three innings of work.
With UNO's home field still unsuitable for play after last week's snowstorm, this Wednesday's game has been moved to Northwest Missouri State. The Mavs and Bearcats will play a doubleheader in Kansas City, starting at 1 p.m.
