Weather Halts Mavs at Missouri Western

The Mavericks will have to wait a few more days to open their season. A scheduled doubleheader at Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo., Wednesday has now been moved to April 18 because of cold weather. UNO will now head to Orlando, Fla., to begin play in the Rebel Spring Games Saturday.
The Mavericks, ranked No. 11 in pre-season NCAA II polls, will play 12 games on the March 10-15 spring break trip, with the first assignments on Saturday against St. Joseph's and Wayne State (Mich.).
The full spring-trip schedule (all game times Eastern Time):
March 10: St. Joseph's, 9 a.m.; Wayne State, 11 a.m.
March 11: Ashland, 9 a.m.; Lock Haven, 1 p.m.
March 12: New Haven, 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
March 13: Indiana (Pa.), 1 p.m.; Slippery Rock, 5 p.m.
March 14: East Stroudsburg, 3 p.m.; Merrimack, 5 p.m.
March 15: Massachusetts-Lowell, 1 p.m.; California (Pa.), 5 p.m.
The Records
Nebraska-Omaha finished the 2006 season with a 47-13 record overall. UNO, 11-1 in regular season North Central Conference play, was second in the league in the tournament and advanced to the NCAA II Regional Tournament, losing in the third round.
The Coach
Maverick head coach Jeanne Tostenson Scarpello is in her eighth season at UNO with a record of 315-85-1. She has led the team to six NCC titles and six straight regional tournament appearances, including the national title in 2001. Her assistants are Michala Cimino, in her 10th season, Kevin Dunn and Cory Petermann. Scarpello is the second coach in UNO history to record 300 career wins. Mary Yori is the all-time leader with 459 victories from 1989-99.

The Mavericks return six position starters and two starting pitchers from last year's squad. Key returnees include third baseman Leslie Svoboda (.479, 21 HRs, 65 RBIs) and pitchers Taren Kirk (19-6, 1.04 ERA) and Cheris Kuster (18-4, 1.16 ERA). All three were all-NCC selections, along with catcher Brianna Cataudella (.264, 5 HRs, 17 RBIs) and shortstop Brooke Wagner (.296, 1 HR, 26 RBIs).

UNO will return to Omaha to open its home season March 21 against No. 3-ranked Emporia State at Claussen-Westgate Field.
