Spartans Strike Late, Down Mavericks 4-2

EAST LANSING, Mich.-Michigan State scored with a minute left, then added an empty net goal to put down a Maverick rally for a 4-2 win in the first game of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association best-of-three quarterfinal series Friday night.
Nebraska-Omaha fell to 18-15-8 and Michigan State improved to 20-12-3 on the season. The two teams will match up again Saturday night in the second game of CCHA quarterfinals at Munn Arena at 6:05 p.m. CST.
There was no scoring in the first period with the Mavericks out-shooting the Spartans 8-2. At 11:31 of the second period Michigan State's Jay Sprauge put the Spartans up by one.
Michigan State made it 2-0 54 seconds into the third period off of a power-play goal from Nick Sucharski.
UNO ended the shutout with a power-play goal at 15:03 from senior defenseman Dan Knapp with the assists going to sophomore forward Dan Charleston and sophomore goalie Jerad Kaufmann. Forty-three seconds later junior forward Mick Lawrence tied it 2-2 with the lone assist coming from fellow junior forward Brandon Scero.
With just 59 seconds left in regulation Spartan, Jim McKenzie scored a back door goal and 20 seconds later Bryan Lerg scored an empty net goal.
