Seniors Sparkle in Senior Day Sweep

Maverick seniors played key roles on Senior Day Thursday as UNO posted a pair of wins over Wayne State at Claussen-Westgate Field in the final regular season home games.
The Mavs, now 17-10, won the first game 3-0 behind senior Cheris Kuster's six-hitter, then claimed the second game, 2-1, as senior left fielder Sara Sortino scored from second on a single by Beth Harris in the bottom of the ninth.
In the opener, senior second baseman Kellyn Kramolisch doubled in the bottom of the first inning and scored on a single by shortstop Brooke Wagner. Wagner also drove home Alison Jergenson with a fifth-inning single for a 2-0 lead. UNO added an insurance run in the sixth when Jenifer McDowell reached on an error and scored on a passed ball.
Kuster, UNO's all-time strikeout leader, fanned seven to improve to 8-4.
In the nightcap, Treightin Yates led off the second with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Wagner and to third on a Sortino single before scoring on a single up the middle by McDowell.
The Wildcats, now 21-10, tied the game in the fourth. Bre Parks walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a two-out single by Sara Salmen.
UNO threatened in the eighth when Kramolisch led off with a single, but Wayne State right-hander Karen Hain retired the next three in order.
In the bottom of the ninth, Sortino singled to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by McDowell and Harris followed with a line-shot to center. Freshman right-hander Melissa Negrete struck out seven to improve to 4-3.
UNO will play five games on Saturday and Sunday in the Concordia-St. Paul Invitational in St. Paul, Minn.
