Mavericks, Lopers Split on Short Notice

KEARNEY, Neb. -- The decision for the University of Nebraska-Omaha baseball team to play cross-state rival Nebraska-Kearney came just a day before playing. Just hours before the first pitch, the teams decided to make it a doubleheader. The Lopers took the first game 5-2, but UNO's offense exploded in the second game, as the Mavs won 14-2 Thursday evening at Memorial Field.
The Lopers (17-16) tagged UNO starter Ryan Hines (1-3) for four runs in the third inning of the first game, highlighted by a bases-loaded double by Kyle Smith. The Mavs (17-15) got two back in the fourth on a sac fly by Brian Goliber and an RBI single from Matt Meyer. Paul Schleifer (2-4) picked up the win for UNK, throwing one and a third scoreless innings.
In the second game the Mavericks jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after one inning, with Tim Huber driving in two runs with a two-out single. As has been the custom of late, UNO had another huge inning, plating eight runs in the second. For the second time in three games Evan Porter dealt the opposition a devastating blow, crushing a grand slam, his team-leading seventh dinger of the year. Alex Kotera added a two-run single in the inning.
Chris Weimer continued to swing a hot bat, as well, also socking a home run, his sixth of the year, a solo shot to lead off the third.
Ryan Lafountain (3-0) earned the win for the Mavs, throwing three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, while fanning four. Jeff Foster (0-5) got hung with the loss, surrendering eight runs, seven earned, in an inning-plus.
UNO will visit North Central Conference foe Minnesota Duluth for consecutive doubleheaders on Sunday and Monday.
