Wagner's 6 RBIs Lead Mavericks

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Shortstop Brooke Wagner collected six RBIs Saturday to lead the Mavericks to two wins in the Concordia-St. Paul Invitational. UNO defeated the host school 4-0 and Southwest Minnesota State 8-3 before Winona State shut down Wagner and the Mavs 1-0.
The 2-1 day puts UNO at 19-11 before Sunday's games against Upper Iowa at 9 a.m. and Minnesota State-Moorhead at 11 a.m.
Wagner's first-inning double in the opening game started the Mavs off to a 2-0 lead. In the fifth, Leslie Svoboda tripled home Alison Jergenson and scored on a sacrifice fly by Treightin Yates. Melissa Negrete gave up just four hits and fanned two to get her second shutout.
Wagner drove in four in the win over Southwest Minnesota State. She was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in UNO's three-run third and belted a three-run double in the Mavs' four-run fourth inning to break the game open. Cheris Kuster struck out nine to get the win.
Winona State took advantage of two UNO errors to score the only run it needed in the fourth inning of the third game. Kuster gave up four hits and struck out four to take the loss. Winona State's Kristen Fossell yielded just three singles in shutting down the Mavericks.
