Negrete's Perfect Game Aids Sweep, Title

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Freshman Melissa Negrete tossed a five-inning perfect game Sunday in a 9-0 win over Upper Iowa and earned the win in relief in a 4-2, eight-inning victory over Minnesota State-Moorhead to help UNO claim the championship in the Concordia-St. Paul Invitational.
Negrete struck out eight in getting her second straight shutout of the tournament. Leslie Svoboda hit a two-run homer and Treightin Yates drove in a pair of runs to lead a 10-hit Maverick offensive attack.
In the second game, Brooke Wagner drove in a pair of runs with a two-out triple in the fourth for a 2-0 UNO lead. The Dragons tied the game on a two-run homer by Holly Kitchen in the sixth.
In the top of the eighth, Kristin Wellwood started on second base, advanced to third on a sacrifice by Chanel Reaves and scored on an error. Svoboda singled home Alison Jergenson for an insurance run. Negrete, who came into the game in relief of Cheris Kuster, retired the side in order to secure the win. She is now 7-3.
UNO, now 21-11 overall, has won seven of its last eight games. The Mavericks face Augustana in Sioux Falls, S.D., Tuesday at 3 p.m. next.
