Mavericks Sweep Bulldogs

DULUTH, Minn. -- Tyler Cloyd struck out 10 in a one-hit, 6-0 win over Minnesota Duluth and the Mavericks fought off a Bulldog rally in the nightcap for an 8-7 win and a sweep of the North Central Conference doubleheader at Bulldog Park Sunday.
The Mavericks, now 19-15 overall and 5-1 in the NCC and the Bulldogs, now 10-18 and 0-4, will conclude the series with a noon doubleheader Monday.
Cloyd baffled UMD until Andrew Heieie broke up the no-hitter with a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth. Meanwhile, shortstop Evan Porter drove in three runs with a first-inning single and a two-run homer in the sixth. Alex Kotera also collected three hits and drove in a run. Cloyd is now 6-2.
In the second game, Porter and Chris Weimer each had three RBIs for the Mavs, who built a 7-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Weimer hit solo homers in the third and the fifth. UMD rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to narrow the gap to 7-4.
In the seventh, UNO added what appeared to be an insurance run when Porter doubled to left and Weimer drove him home with a single.
But the Bulldogs put on their rally caps with two out and no one on base. After a single and a walk, David Olson slammed a three-run homer to pull UMD within 8-7. UMD's Tim Garceau then doubled off UNO reliever Shawn Smith and Blake Denoyer came on to strike out Corey Goblirsch to end the game.
