Klapperich Helps Mavs Salvage Split

DULUTH, Minn. -- Casey Klapperich had a key two-run single and Chris Weimer hit his ninth home run of the season to lead the University of Nebraska-Omaha baseball team to a win in the second half of a North Central Conference doubleheader against Minnesota Duluth Monday at Bulldog field. The Bulldogs needed only three hits to scratch out a 3-2 win in the first game, but the Mavs bounced back for a 5-3 victory in the second.
UNO (20-16, 6-2 NCC) got held to five hits in the opener by UMD (11-20, 1-6) starter John Leitch, pushing across just two runs. Brian Goliber had an RBI single in the fourth, then Casey Klapperich recorded an RBI ground out in the seventh to get the Mavs within a run. But Leitch held on for the complete game victory, going to 1-2. Josh Lundin (3-4) also went the distance for the Mavs, allowing only three hits and striking out nine.
Mavericks starter Ryan Lafountain locked up with UMD's Kyle Zweber in a pitchers' duel in the second game. Through five innings the game was scoreless, with Zweber working on a no-hitter, while Lafountain allowed just one single. Evan Porter foiled Zweber's bid with a single to lead off the sixth. Weimer and Goliber also singled to load the bases, then Klapperich drove in two with the fourth hit of the inning. Zweber led off the bottom of the inning with a hit, leading to two runs for the Bulldogs.
But UNO got three more in the seventh on an RBI single from Alex Kotera, a sacrifice fly from Porter and Weimer's solo shot.
Neither Lafountain or Zweber figured in the decision. Brandon Dahl (2-0) earned the win in relief, throwing the final two innings, allowing just an unearned run in the seventh. Bryan Denisen (1-2), who pitched the seventh, took the loss.
UNO next takes a break from conference play, hosting Missouri Western for a pair of games Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Boys Town. The Mavs return to NCC play Saturday when they visit Augustana for two games, then host the Vikings for two more on Sunday.
