McDowell's 3 HRs, 8 RBIs Help Mavs Split

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Jenifer McDowell slammed three home runs and drove in eight to give the Mavericks a 9-3 win over Augustana Tuesday in the first game of a North Central Conference doubleheader. The Vikings earned a split with a 3-1 win in the second game.
UNO, now 22-12 and 5-3, will play a non-conference doubleheader at Missouri Western Wednesday at 3 p.m.
McDowell tied a school record with her three home runs. She belted two-run shots in the second and sixth and capped her day with a grand slam in the seventh. It was the first three-homer day by a Maverick since Michala Cimino, UNO's current assistant coach, first did it in 1994.
UNO took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of the second game when Leslie Svoboda drove home Alison Jergenosn. But Augustana, 12-17 and 3-1, got all the runs it needed Ally Rutherford's three-run homer in the bottom of the inning.
The Mavericks threatened in the sixth when Svoboda led off with a double and Brooke Wagner delivered a one-out single. But Augustana senior Afton Murray, 6-7, retired Sara Sortino and Kristin Wellwood to put down the rally.
UNO starter, freshman Melissa Negrete, gave up just one single after the first inning.
