Weimer, Porter Slug Mavs to Sweep of Augustana

OMAHA, Neb. -- Chris Weimer and Evan Porter slugged the University of Nebraska-Omaha baseball team to a sweep of a North Central Conference doubleheader with Augustana, 6-2 and 13-11, Monday at Boys Town. Weimer socked a three-run homer in the first game, then Porter hit a walk-off two-run shot to end a madcap three-hour marathon in the second game.
The Mavericks, winners of seven in a row and 17 of their last 20, improve to 26-16 on the year, 10-2 in NCC play. The Vikings fall to 14-18, 3-7.
Weimer's team-leading 11th home run of the season gave UNO starter Josh Lundin (4-4) all the help he would need, as the lefty went five strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walking three and striking out seven. Shawn Smith tossed the final two innings, allowing just a walk, earning his seventh save.
Brian Goliber added an insurance run with an RBI single in the third. Tim Huber went 3-for-3 with two doubles, scoring a run in the fifth, and Matt Boro closed out the scoring in the sixth with a solo home run, his second the year.
The second game was a see-saw affair that saw Augustana take a 6-0 lead in the top of the sixth. The Mavericks got two back in the bottom of the second, then plated eight runs in a wild third inning. Boro had the first big hit, a two-run double, and later Alex Kotera drove in two with a single up the middle. Weimer drove in two more with a triple, but was called out on a controversial interference call. Nonetheless, UNO held a 10-6 lead at that point.
The Vikings tied the game right back up in the top of the fourth, scoring four times to make it 10-10. Another run-scoring hit by Boro in the bottom of the inning gave UNO a brief 11-10 lead, before Augustana tied it in the sixth scoring on one of numerous wild pitches in the game.
But after a one-out single by Kotera in the bottom of the seventh, Porter ended the game, hooking a long fly ball around the left-field foul pole, hit 10th dinger of the season.
Blake Denoyer (1-3) threw the final three and two-thirds innings, allowing just one run on three hits to keep the Mavericks afloat.
UNO is scheduled for a doubleheader with cross-state rival Nebraska-Kearney back at Boys Town Tuesday at 1 p.m. However with bad weather in the forecast, the games will likely get moved to Thursday.
